Chandler’s fried chicken
The cold, wet, scary weather in Chicago today really made me want some comforting Southern cooking. So I looked back to last week when some of my new friends took us to Chandler's Deli in Knoxville on the most beautiful, sunny day!
I read on their website that this restaurant has the best BBQ in Tennesse and was told by my friends that Chandler’s had the most delicious fried chicken in the country, and I LOVE FRIED CHICKEN!!! The fried chicken itself (Figure 1) doesn’t look very special, but inside, it is just layers of juicy, tender meat. I was impressed with how perfectly it was fried!
For my first side, I had some of their peppered mac-n-cheese (Figure 2). I’m really not sure how much butter was dumped into this, but it was a gooey bowl of amazing!
I also had some fried okra (Figure 3), which is much better than I had expected. I didn’t think there would be much flavor, but this okra was emanating a savoriness from within. It was definitely the “healthy” side I was looking for, especially with that perfect crunch on the outside.
My friend Amber also purchased some fried pickles (Figure 4). Now I have never had fried pickles before and was very intrigued. Again, perfectly fried, these salty yet slightly sweet pickles were still filled with juice. I must say fried pickles are delightful!
I couldn’t stuff anymore into my stomach, but Bob pointed out that there was banana pudding with vanilla wafers on the menu… How could I not go for it? So I took it to go (Figure 5). It might look a bit of a mess, but it was flowing with the sweet taste of bananas! To be honest, this was better than Magnolia Bakery’s banana pudding…! AND it was cheaper!
- You will need a car or taxi to get to Chandler’s, but it is absolutely worth it.
- Chandler’s is super cheap, so order away!
